The UAE has secured the hosting rights for COSPAR 2028, the world’s premier space research event. This milestone achievement was announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence.
“We are delighted to share that the UAE has won the bid to host COSPAR 2028, the world’s largest forum focused on space research,” said Sheikh Hamdan in a post on his official X (Twitter) account. “For the first time, this prestigious event will be held in the Arab world, bringing together over 3,000 researchers, experts, and scientists to present and discuss groundbreaking scientific discoveries.”

The UAE has firmly established itself as a leading hub for the global scientific community, particularly in the field of space exploration and research. This successful bid further strengthens the nation’s role in fostering significant international cooperation in the space sector.
Sheikh Hamdan further expressed his gratitude to the team at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, whose dedicated efforts have made this remarkable achievement possible.
The Hope Probe and the Emirates Mars Mission
In 2020, the UAE made history by launching the Hope Probe, a state-of-the-art spacecraft designed to study the Martian atmosphere. The Emirates Mars Mission aimed to provide valuable insights into the Red Planet’s climate dynamics, offering scientists worldwide a comprehensive understanding of Mars.
Constellation of SAR satellites
The UAE is also investing in a constellation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, which will create highly-detailed radar images of land use, ice cover, and surface changes. These images will have a wide range of scientific and commercial applications, such as tracing oil spills, tracking maritime vessels, and monitoring crop yields.

813 satellite project
Moreover, in December 2023, the National Space Science and Technology Center announced the implementation of the 813 satellite project, one of the initiatives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This project aims to provide accurate hyperspectral data and enhance cooperation in the field of space between the countries of the Arab Cooperation Group, with funding from the Emirates Space Agency and in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates University.
The Summer Space Explorer Camp 2024
To further nurture the next generation of space enthusiasts, the MBRSC has announced the opening of registration for its Summer Space Explorer Camp 2024. The camp, tailored for young space enthusiasts aged 11 to 15, will run from August 5-8 for boys and August 12-15 for girls. The 4-day camp promises an extraordinary experience, immersing participants in a wide array of space-related theoretical and practical workshops, activities, and exciting sessions designed to inspire and educate.

Moreover, this initiative is part of MBRSC’s broader effort to spark an interest in space science and technology among young people, aligning with the Centre’s mission to nurture future scientists, engineers, and astronauts who will play a vital role in advancing the UAE’s space ambitions.
