The move aligns with SRTA’s commitment to sustainability and supports the UAE’s goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050
The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has announced the launch of the initial phase of its eco-friendly electric bus service. This initiative includes several routes connecting three key destinations, aimed at enhancing the mass transit options provided by the authority’s bus fleet. It aligns with SRTA’s commitment to environmental sustainability and supports the UAE’s strategic goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050.
Key destinations and operational details
Engineer Youssef Khamis Al Othmani, SRTA’s chairman, stated that the first phase will feature 10 electric buses operating between Dubai, Ajman, and Al Hamriyah. The choice of these locations was informed by comprehensive studies and statistics conducted in collaboration with the Intercity Transport Department, focusing on the most popular routes with the highest passenger demand.
Commitment to environmental standards
Al Othmani emphasized the authority’s dedication to implementing top-tier quality standards as part of its strategy to promote environmental stewardship. This includes developing comprehensive plans to meet green transportation objectives and lower carbon emissions. He further noted that the SRTA is committed to establishing mechanisms that align with sustainable initiatives and launching eco-friendly transport options in accordance with government directives for a safe and sustainable transport ecosystem.
Procurement and future expansion
Previously, a contract was signed to procure 10 electric buses for this initial phase, following successful tests of two buses to confirm their efficiency. Additionally, multiple models were evaluated based on their compatibility with the UAE’s climate conditions. Future phases will see an expansion in the fleet of electric buses in Sharjah, supporting both the UAE’s and Sharjah’s government efforts to minimize carbon footprints through the use of renewable energy in public transport.
Specifications of the new buses
The selected buses are from the King Long model range, featuring standard specifications such as a length of 9 meters and a capacity for 41 passengers. Moreover, the buses comply with international safety standards and have received the European safety certificate. Equipped with air conditioning and a battery cooling system, these buses are designed to operate effectively in the UAE’s climate.
