In a world where digital innovation shapes every aspect of our lives, Qatar National Library (QNL) leads the way in blending traditional library roles with cutting-edge technology. Hosting the Libraries Lead Forum 2024 alongside the 27th Annual Conference of the Special Libraries Association – Arabian Gulf Chapter, QNL set the stage for a vital discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) in libraries.

QNL equips librarians for the future

The event kicked off with a hands-on workshop, “Unlocking Digital Competence in the Age of AI.” This session aimed to arm librarians with the new AI and digital skills for. In today’s age, understanding digital tools and AI is not just an added advantage but a necessity for library professionals. This workshop offered them a chance to grasp essential digital skills, ensuring they remain at the forefront of community service in the information era.

A vision for digital literacy

The forum’s special session, under the theme “Libraries’ Roadmap to Digital Dexterity and Proficiency,” saw high-profile speakers dive into the role of libraries in fostering digital literacy. Inaugurated by HE Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, the session emphasized collaboration and shared goals in advancing the library sector. Dr. Al-Kawari highlighted the shift towards knowledge-based economies in the Gulf, underlining the critical role of libraries in this transition.

Speakers from diverse backgrounds, including Tan Huism of QNL and experts from Mada Centre and Georgetown University in Qatar, shared insights on adapting libraries to digital shifts. They highlighted the constant evolution of libraries, from parchment to digital bytes, maintaining the core mission of knowledge access.

Building digitally empowered communities

Abeer Al-Kuwari, QNL’s director of research and learning services, highlighted the forum’s alignment with ongoing efforts to promote equitable learning and access to information. The Libraries Lead Forum 2024, she noted, is a continuation of QNL’s dedication to cultural exchange and advancing the goals of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 

The forum highlighted the importance of libraries in the digital age—not just as repositories of information but as active, innovative players in the digital space. By equipping library professionals with AI and digital skills, QNL is ensuring that libraries continue to serve their communities effectively, adapting to their changing needs.
