QatarEnergy plans to build a large urea production complex to boost global food and energy security
QatarEnergy has revealed plans to construct a new, large-scale urea production complex that will more than double the country’s urea (fetilizer) output, significantly contributing to global food production and security.
This ambitious project includes the establishment of three ammonia production lines that will provide feedstock for four new urea production trains, all located in Mesaieed Industrial City.
Once completed, these facilities are expected to increase Qatar’s urea production capacity from approximately 6 million tons per year to 12.4 million tons per year. The first urea train from this initiative is anticipated to commence production by the end of this decade.
The announcement was made by Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s minister of State for Energy Affairs and president and CEO of QatarEnergy, during a press conference at the company’s headquarters in Doha.
Al-Kaabi mentioned that Qatar had been producing ammonia and urea for more than 50 years. He noted that the country was now expanding its expertise and further solidifying its position with an unprecedented mega project aimed at making Qatar the world’s leading urea producer, which would play a crucial role in ensuring food security for millions globally.

Commitment to energy security
Moreover, Al-kaabi highlighted that developing this project in Mesaieed Industrial City would optimize the existing infrastructure for the petrochemical and fertilizer industries, including one of the largest fertilizer and petrochemical export facilities in the MENA region. This development would position Mesaieed as a global hub for urea production.
The Minister of State for Energy Affairs emphasized that the announcement represented another significant step in their ongoing commitment to provide essential energy products that support sustained economic growth and enhance energy and food security worldwide, through a balanced approach to meeting increasing demand and managing natural resources effectively.
