Microsoft Encourages Ethical AI Practices in the Middle East

Microsoft has announced a plan to establish a foundation that supports the appropriate development of AI in Abu Dhabi. This step is significant for AI governance in the Middle East and it advances moral AI norms across the region.

This announcement came before an AI meeting in Paris which will bring together world leaders from academics and technology fields. The UAE is now planning to be a leader in the responsible development and application of AI technology.

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is collaborating with G42, an Emirati AI developer to establish a solid foundation. Microsoft’s involvement highlights the company’s commitment to the region and builds upon its 2024 $1.5 billion investment in G42.

Global Collaboration

MBZUAI will soon present the Global Risk and AI Safety Preparedness (GRASP) initiative. It maps major AI risks and explores various global solutions. GRASP will present its findings to the OECD and members of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence.

Many UAE institutions are more involved in AI development. MBZUAI and the Polytechnique Engineering School in Paris formed a research partnership as part of the general collaboration with France.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Emmanuel Macron recently signed an agreement to establish a $50 billion AI campus and data center in France.
