This event highlights Brazil’s leadership as it sets the agenda for the upcoming BRICS summit

Brazil will host the BRICS leaders’ summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and 7, the country’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira announced. This event emphasizes Brazil’s leadership role as it took over the rotating presidency of BRICS on January 1 and is currently steering working groups to formulate the agenda and topics for the summit, which will convene heads of state and government.

The announcement came after Vieira met with Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes on Saturday. This decision is a continuation of the city’s successful hosting of the G20 Leaders’ Summit last November, showcasing its ability to facilitate high-profile international gatherings.

“We will welcome the heads of state from the 20 countries that are full members and partners of BRICS, where we will make important decisions on development, cooperation, and improving living conditions in these nations. Once again, Rio de Janeiro will be the stage for a major international gathering,” Vieira stated.

Paes, who has established a commission to oversee the event’s organization, remarked that the BRICS summit would enhance international relations while promoting cultural, trade, and tourism exchanges among participating countries.

UAE’s commitment to multilateralism and dialogue

The UAE’s accession to the BRICS group exemplifies its commitment to multilateralism and constructive dialogue, aimed at supporting development, prosperity, and wellbeing for nations around the globe. This strategic move aligns with the UAE’s long-standing approach of forming partnerships with countries, international organizations, and institutions to boost the competitiveness and sustainability of its economy while seeking new growth opportunities.

Younis Haji Al Khoori, under-secretary of the UAE Ministry of Finance, emphasized that the UAE’s strategic partnerships have effectively showcased its key initiatives on the global stage. He added that joining BRICS is in line with the “We the UAE 2031” vision, which seeks to strengthen the UAE’s role as a strategic partner in promoting global economic cooperation.

Balancing global policy priorities with Global South needs

The UAE further aims to strike a balance between global policy priorities and the needs of the Global South, Al Khoori stated. “Committed to inclusivity and equity in the global economic landscape, the UAE strives to ensure that international policies effectively consider the interests and perspectives of developing nations. It will advance the development agenda of the New Development Bank concerning emerging markets and developing countries, where the bank is a key tool for promoting BRICS development priorities,” he further added.

Bridging cooperation for common goals

On financial cooperation mechanisms with BRICS countries, Al Khoori said, “The UAE looks to bridge cooperation to achieve common goals, including financial stability, growth, sustainable development, and strengthening trade and financial cooperation to support economic growth in the Global South. The UAE aims to support these efforts through knowledge exchange to contribute to building a global economic and financial framework that upholds the highest standards of justice, balance, representation, and inclusivity, grounded in the principles of economic multilateralism.”
