Billie Jean King Cup to be covered by EBU’s Eurovision Sport

Eurovision Sport, the streaming platform run by the European Broadcasting Union alliance of public service broadcasters across the continent, has unveiled rights to air five ties from the Billie Jean King Cup women’s tennis competition this weekend (April 12 and 13).

This tie-up, covering five qualifier ties (out of eight in total across those two days) will result in Eurovision Sport covering its first-ever tennis tournament.

Glen Killane, executive director at EBU Sport, said: “By hosting the Billie Jean King Cup, we not only showcase top-tier women’s tennis but also reinforce our mission to connect fans across the world with the sports they love, free to all.”

The EBU launched its first direct-to-consumer streaming platform in February.

Eurovision Sport is accessible online, as an app, and, later in the year, will be made available through connected TVs and selected free ad-supported streaming TV channels.

So far, sports action available on the platform includes properties from rowing, horse racing, motor racing, and now tennis.

The Billie Jean King Cup, a women’s national teams competition, was rebranded from its previous incarnation of the Fed Cup in 2020.

Last August, TWG Global, the holding company of billionaire businessman Mark Walter, secured a 49% stake in the tournament.

The TWG investment saw the firm acquire 49% of a newly created commercial entity called Billie Jean King Cup Limited, with the new venture set up to sell sponsorship, broadcast, and other commercial rights to the competition alongside Billie Jean King Enterprises, the investment vehicle focused on women’s sports founded by King and led by her wife Ilana Kloss.

Players competing in last year’s event finals received record prize money equivalent to the men’s Davis Cup Finals, through an initiative from the International Tennis Federation.
