The US tech giant Amazon has revealed a huge plan to invest $13.4 billion (20 billion Australian dollars) by 2029 to improve artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services in Australia. This is the biggest tech investment ever made by a foreign company in the country, and it will help expand Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers.
The money will boost Australia’s AI technology and help keep AWS facilities running smoothly. The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, is excited about it. The Australian PM has stated that, “This is the largest investment our country has seen from a global technology provider, and is an exciting opportunity for Australia to build AI capability using secure, resilient infrastructure.”
Part of the investment will go toward building three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, making a total of 11 renewable energy projects by Amazon in Australia. These solar farms will generate 1.4 million megawatt-hours of clean energy each year, which can power about 290,000 homes.
As per the reports, the firm started working in Australia in the year 2012 by opening its AWS Asia Pacific region in Sydney. The firm had strengthened its role by teaming up with the Australian government to create a “Top Secret” AWS Cloud for defense and security needs by July 2024.
Recently, on June 11, 2025, Amazon partnered with Talen Energy to use nuclear power for its AWS servers and AI data centers in Pennsylvania until 2042, after announcing a $20 billion investment in AI there. This fits with Australia’s plan to grow its economy.
The government’s Department of Industry, Science and Resources thinks AI and automation could add $400 billion to the country’s wealth every year by 2030. Amazon has also shown it cares about the environment and technology by spending over $312 million on renewable energy projects in Australia from 2020 to 2022.
