UAE Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei said the advanced transport system has boosted the UAE’s competitiveness
The UAE Railway Programme is vital for shaping the future of the transport sector, focusing on the development of a national railway network that will connect the seven emirates, major cities, ports, and industrial areas throughout the country. This initiative aims to generate significant economic opportunities and jobs within the railway and supporting sectors.
Government commitment to connectivity
Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, UAE minister of Energy and Infrastructure, highlighted the importance of this programme, noting its role in enhancing connectivity and economic development. In a recent interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) during the Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Exhibition and Conference – Global Rail 2024, he emphasized how the transport sector actively contributes to the growth of intra-trade and cargo transport in the UAE.
Impact on trade and economic competitiveness
Al Mazrouei further revealed that in 2023, 22 percent of the UAE’s non-oil trade was transported by road, amounting to AED576.4 billion ($156.9 billion). He pointed out that the advanced transport system has strengthened the UAE’s competitive edge in this essential sector. The Etihad Rail Project, in particular, is experiencing steady growth in cargo volume and service quality for a diverse range of companies, he noted.

Future developments in passenger transport
Additionally, the passenger transport phase is set to launch by the end of 2025, which will provide vital links between all emirates and key tourist destinations across the nation. Additionally, Al Mazrouei noted the significance of the Hafeet Rail Network project, explaining that it will create the fastest railway connection between the UAE and the Sultanate of Oman, with substantial bank participation in financing this strategic initiative.

Moreover, Al Mazrouei expressed optimism about the project’s economic foundations and mentioned the potential for connecting with other Gulf Cooperation Council countries to enhance prosperity, development, and growth.
