The UAE-based artificial intelligence company G42 has formed a partnership with Nvidia, the US computer chip giant, to set up a climate tech laboratory in Abu Dhabi, aimed at better predicting the weather using AI.

In what is Nvidia’s first partnership with the UAE company, the lab will “serve as a hub for research and development, driving forward both companies’ commitment to environmental sustainability,” a statement said on Friday.

The two companies will use Nvidia’s Earth-2, a high-tech open platform that forecasts weather conditions using AI.

The lab in the UAE capital will also “mobilise the creation of tailored climate and weather solutions that leverage over 100 petabytes of geophysical data assets,” the statement said.

A petabyte is a measure of memory or data storage capacity and is equal to taking more than 4,000 digital photographs every day for a lifetime.

Nvidia, based in California and currently valued at more than $3 trillion, dominates the AI chip market, with a 95 percent share, despite advances by rivals.

It remains the preferred choice for many developers and organisations worldwide, including those in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

“The Earth-2 Climate Tech Lab will propel environmental solutions using the most advanced accelerated computing and AI technology to benefit millions of people around the world,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia.

Earlier this week, G42 announced a collaboration with Microsoft to open two centres in Abu Dhabi to advance work on “responsible” AI practices.

The deal extends the partnership announced in April, in which Microsoft committed $1.5 billion to support G42’s global expansion strategy.
