The total amount spent on digital games in Jordan reached $82.5 million in 2023, official data has revealed.

Nearly $17 million was allocated to paid games while $7.3 million was spent on live in-game purchases, state-run Jordan News Agency said, quoting the Information and Communications Technology Association of Jordan (Intaj).

Mobile games commanded the largest share with $45 million, followed by $6.5 million for online games and $6.6 million for in-game advertising.

The total number of users expanded to just under 6 million in 2023.

Spending is expected to increase to $103 million by 2027, propelled by factors such as annual growth rates, market size and competition among digital game developers.

Lucy Chow, secretary general of the World Business Angels Investment Forum and general partner of the WBAF Angel Investment Fund, wrote in AGBI last year that the rollout of smartphones and development of emerging markets has driven a surge of video game players from 200 million in the mid-2000s to around three billion today.

She wrote that wearables such as VR glasses, game controller rings, gamer smartphone peripherals, esports fitness and health trackers, esports-specific sensors and AR glasses will transform games and esports in the 2020s.
