A recent study published in the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education has shed light on the concerning correlation between the use of AI software, particularly ChatGPT, and deteriorating academic performance among university students. The research, conducted by Mohammed Abbas and his team from the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences in Pakistan, delved into the habits and experiences of 494 students regarding their reliance on ChatGPT for completing assignments.
Rising dependence and negative impact
The study unearthed a troubling trend: an increasing number of students turning to ChatGPT as a crutch for completing their academic tasks. With up to 32% of university students reportedly using ChatGPT on a weekly basis, concerns are growing over the detrimental effects on their cognitive abilities and academic outcomes. Abbas and his team discovered that students who heavily relied on ChatGPT exhibited increased procrastination, memory loss, and ultimately, poorer academic performance.
Interviews conducted as part of the study revealed a vicious cycle wherein students, feeling pressed for time or overwhelmed by their workload, resorted to ChatGPT for quick solutions. However, this reliance on AI assistance gradually eroded their cognitive efforts and critical thinking skills, leading to decreased memory retention and academic performance over time. Abbas noted that students who were more results-focused were less likely to lean on AI tools, indicating a potential correlation between mindset and dependency on such software.
Effects on academic outcomes
The research findings highlighted the stark consequences of excessive ChatGPT usage on student’s personal and academic lives. Notably, frequent users of ChatGPT were more prone to procrastination and reported experiencing memory loss. Additionally, these students tended to achieve lower grade averages compared to their peers who utilized AI tools sparingly or not at all.
